My Marble Cake

Recently I have been baking like mad. I've never been very good in the kitchen however i've now changed this.
I love cakes and have been wanting to make a marble cake for years but only just got round to making one last week.

To make my Marble cake you will need:

175g soft butter
175g caster sugar
175g self-raising flour
1 tsp baking powder
1/3 cup of milk
3 eggs
50g Dark chocolate chopped (I used 70% dark chocolate)

1. You will need a round baking tin, 20cm or you can use a loaf tin. Cut the baking paper to size, leave a little over as this makes it easier to peal away from the cake. Grease the tin and sides as well to prevent the cake from sticking. Pre-heat the oven to 180c or Gas mark 4.

2. Melt the chocolate on the hob (you can use a microwave but watch it otherwise the chocolate will burn) make sure are no lumps, keep warm once melted.

3. Mix the soft butter and caster sugar into a mixing bowl and mix till light and fluffy and all sugar granules are mixed with the soft butter. I used a hand mixer for this (much quicker).

4. Add one egg at a time and mix into the butter and sugar. Once all the eggs are added and mixed add the 1/3 cup of milk. (this point the mixture will be light in colour and will be a watery mixture - don't panic it will thicken up).

5. Add the sifted flour and baking powder to the mix and fold into the mix (I used my hand mixer on a lower setting to mix this together).

6. Split half the mixture and add the melted chocolate to one half and mix till the chocolate is combined with the cake mix.

7. When adding to the baking tin, spoon in the mixture alternating between the plain and chocolate mixture. When all the mixture is added, with a knife draw a zig zag through the mixture, this will help give the marble effect.

8. Place the baking tin in the middle shelf of the oven and cook for 30-40 minutes. I get my out at 30 minutes to check it is cooked and not burnt. To check if the cake is cooked, take a clean knife and put the blade into the middle of the cake, if the knife comes out clean means it is cooked all the way through and your cake is ready.

9. Leave your cake to cool in the tin for 10-15 minutes before removing. Once cooled remove from the tin carefully, remove the baking powder and leave to fully cool on a cooling rack.

Enjoy
